 6-Day Morocco Fossil and Geology Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech – Sidi Rahal Mineral Mine – Jurassic Sites – Ouarzazate

Depart Marrakech in the morning toward Sidi Rahal, a well-known mining area. First, visit local mines to collect minerals such as amethyst, quartz, and agate. Then, continue to a traditional salt mine, followed by a Jurassic marine fossil site where sea urchin fossils can be found. In the late afternoon, drive to Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight.


Day 2: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Stromatolite Site – Draa Valley – Alnif

After breakfast, visit the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, explore an ancient stromatolite site, offering insight into some of the earliest forms of life on Earth. After lunch, drive through the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest valley, known for its palm groves and historic ksars. Arrive in Alnif in the evening for dinner and overnight at a hotel.


Day 3: Alnif – Jbel Tiskaouine – Merzouga

Depart Alnif toward Jbel Tiskaouine, one of Morocco’s most important Ordovician fossil sites. Here, explore fossil-rich layers where Calymene and Flexicalymene trilobites can be collected. After a full day of fossil hunting and geological exploration, continue toward Merzouga. Arrive near the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon and overnight in a hotel or desert lodge.


Day 4: Merzouga – Kem Kem – M’Fis – Filon 12 – Merzouga

After breakfast, head toward the Kem Kem Beds, famous for Cretaceous fossils. Stop at Begaa to explore sites with dinosaur bones and fossil shark teeth. Continue to M’Fis, an old mining village, then visit Filon 12, known for its unique mineralization and geological formations. In the afternoon, return to Merzouga for relaxation or a short desert walk. Overnight near the dunes.


Day 5: Merzouga – Kem Kem – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Rose Valley

Depart Merzouga toward Erfoud and the Kem Kem Mountains. Stop again in fossil-rich zones to further explore dinosaur bone beds and fossil quarries. Visit a local workshop to observe fossil extraction techniques, then continue to the Botchrafine Mountains for Devonian fossils and crinoid sites. Later, pass through the dramatic Todra Gorges before arriving in the Rose Valley (Boumalne Dades) for overnight.


Day 6: Rose Valley – Ouarzazate – Amethyst Site – Marrakech

After breakfast, drive back toward Ouarzazate, stopping at a known amethyst site for mineral collecting. Following lunch, return to Marrakech via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m). Arrival in Marrakech marks the end of your Morocco Fossil and Geology Tour.
